The Secret's Out

Posted by Martin Williams on September 17, 2008 11:31 AM |

"We are not down and outs. We are just trying to make Rhyl better."
The words of Geraldine Hughes during last Tuesday's Secret Millionaire rang true for many people in the struggling seaside town, particularly those who've lived in the West End for more than five minutes.
As a man who grew up in Rhyl, went to school in Rhyl and until last week was sat editing the Visitor from Rhyl High Street, I have written many times about its problems, as well as the wonderful people who work hard to make it a better place.
But watching this Channel Four programme left a bitter taste in the mouth.
Millionaire Gavin Wheeldon hopped off the train and was met by two closed pubs - Costigans and the Bee and Station.
He was then accosted by a group of lads with Manchester accents, who complained about not being able to find a job.
What struck me was the girl on a bicycle, who rather than get off it and help hard-working Geraldine with the new community house, slated the town and told poor Gavin to "sort it out".
Before "sorting out" the dilapidated buildings, empty properties and boarded-up buildings, we should perhaps address Rhyl's fundamental problem - the people.
Watching Secret Millionaire was frustrating, with the millionaire in question only managing to find a handful of individuals he could help. Over past weeks, the other millionaires visit equally run-down communities but there were an abundance of groups and organisations, striving to make their lives better.
We don't have that in Rhyl. There are some, a few diamonds among the rough - the likes of Jack Baker, Lee Barlow and Tony Cheetham - but they are few and far between.
Instead, Rhyl is cursed with those who refuse to work, drink for most of the day and complain about their lot.
I am in no way xenophobic or closed-minded but it's been well-documented that the area has been overrun by newcomers from the Midlands and North West, here for the cheap rent. They see Denbighshire County Council as a soft touch - they may be right.
Why would they want to join a community group and better the place? They have no affinity with Rhyl. It's a horrible place, why should they bother?
Many of them move to this resort, and then resort to crime.
While I was, on the whole, proud of what I watched last Tuesday - proud of the likes of Geraldine and Jack - I was overwhelmed and emotional at how my town - our town - has fallen so greatly.
I just hope local town and county councillors were watching, especially as it was up to Gavin to point West Rhyl Community Group in the direction of Lottery funding.
He was amazed at how a quarter of the properties in the West End were empty, yet Rhyl has a problem with homelessness.
He's right, and I admired the fact he was no easy mark. He wasn't going to waste his money on those who refuse to help themselves.
I was delighted to see the guys at the Labour Club - a club my own grandad used to run - strive to keep it going, and the young girl who wants to go to college and better her life. Good for her, I wish her every success.
I'm proud to be from Rhyl. If everyone in the town was equally proud it may start moving in the right direction.
Hopefully the Secret Millionaire was the straw that broke the council's back. I pray they give the town the support it needs so Rhyl can welcome a new era and we can put the last 15 years behind us."

Yeah, good old Jack, a man who through pride let most of the equipment in "his" gym be taken away, notice there was no ring there the seocnd time they filmed, coincidence, no? Also, amateur boxing gym for the community, yet the fighter talking is an unlicenced fighter (who has been training since the age of 12 and not "since ive trained ive kept off the streets") and others have been banned by good old jack for doing the same.

Aside form that you're bang on the money mate!

Although I am a newcomer from the North West (and admittedly, I am finding the rent cheap) I completely agree with Martin's comments about community spirit in Rhyl.

As a resident of Rhyl for over six months I have to say I have never lived in any community with residents as caring and dedicated as this one. I for one feel proud to call the town my home and hope the show will inspire people to work for a better future for the town.

Call me an old cynic, but I got the feeling that many involved in this programme had a good idea what was going on. There is not a cat in hell's chance that the wonderful Les and Rita would have allowed an itinerant near their cod and chips, so I assume that scene was included for effect. By concentrating on a square mile of deprivation, the film makers gave a distorted view of the town, ignoring the many good things that go on elsewhere. I did not know that Abbey Street could be filmed from so many different angles! Before the local councillors or our M.P. cry 'foul', it cannot be denied that these places exist, and people exist within them. There can be no excuses for the filthy surroundings, and for the dross that has been imported into the town to fill these areas. My hope is that the surfeit of apartments on the prom will not be used to house these dregs in comfort when they fail to be snapped up by buyers who will naturally object to living close to junkies and burnt out arcades. The burnt out arcade on the prom was a priority of Chris Ruane eleven years ago. God help us if we are on the back burner. Perhaps we need a few Gavins with their nice yachts and full pockets to fill our new marina!! Don't hold your breath.

Unfortunately when UK seaside resorts first began their decline due to the package holiday and cheap flights in the early 90's, Rhyl and its councilors declined to comment. As the years went on and tourism numbers were falling (fact) Rhyl councilors denied any change, and carried on as they always had done. Then Clwyd was split and Denbighshire was made the poorer sister to Flintshire and Wrexham, Rhyl councilors made no effort to prepare for a rocky future now saddled with much debt. As the 90's became the 00's the same pattern occurred and no one was protecting Rhyl. Even quite recently tourism was considered alive and well in the area, this simply isn't so. Tourism is dead in Rhyl. It does not bring enough money to support the town. And so the backslapping Freemason fraternity that are Rhyl councilors allowed a series of quick cash deals to happen, cheap rent for benefit claimants, the opening of cheap & nasty bars and clubs that have sealed the town's reputation for being a violent and socially backward place to be. There was no plan for alternative industry that would fill the hole tourism had left. There was no questioning the number of premises allowed alcohol licenses. No support to stop the two main high schools from closing their 6th forms. No money or planning to upgrade the fair or improve the businesses along the promenade so they don't become disgusting eye sores. No planning or support to maintain Rhyl at a decent standard. The mantra seems to be 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'! Well what are all the people that did make money from tourism saying now? 'It was broke and no one did anything about it at the time and now it's all gone and we have no income!' One example is the Grange which will rot away. The Mason councilors have no control over this and as it doesn't indirectly benefit them they have no interest in it.

And what of Ann 'Ineffective' Jones and Chris 'Where are you?' Ruane, what are they doing? Answer NOTHING.
