Give Wellington Road the boot

Posted by Martin Williams on April 1, 2008 4:33 PM |

Parking in Rhyl.
What an absolute disaster this situation is.
There are double yellow lines along Wellington Road, yet if I’m driving along the one-way street I have to check there is nothing to my left before moving into the next lane if I want to progress.
Why? Because in its wisdom the council has allowed disabled motorists to park along the right hand side.
It’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. Stationary motors up and down the High Street and Russell Road, even on the pedestrianised area because people can’t be bothered walking the extra 300 yards to stuff their faces at Subway.
Denbighshire County Council has carried out a review of existing parking restrictions and is proposing new plans that cover streets in an area with set boundaries.
The boundary to the north is by the West and East Parades, the boundary to the east is Bath Street and Grange Road.
The south is by the railway line and the boundary to the west is Crescent Road, Vaughan Street and Elwy Street.
The main purpose of the proposed new restrictions is to ensure that identified traffic management and road safety issues are addressed by appropriate prohibitions of waiting, loading and unloading and to allocate the remaining road space where on-street parking can be allowed for time limited waiting periods and/or permit holders, loading only, disabled badge holders and taxis.
Information will be posted on the affected streets until this Friday (April 4), and then what?
Some say the council are to blame for this situation, but ignorant drivers are also at fault.
Last week I saw a guy get out of his car, skip across the road and into the bookmakers. If he can jog across the street he can park half-a-mile away.
Then again, there are no spaces anywhere near the town centre, and this was one bad egg. Many disabled drivers could not walk that far.
Here’s a solution. Demolish the Bee and Station pub near the town’s railway station and replace it with 20-30 parking spaces. That would account for the motorists sprawled across this area of town.
The pub has been closed for over 10 years, what are they waiting for, the arrival of Stringfellow’s? Knock it down for goodness sake, it’s an eyesore, we need parking spaces and if that’s the first thing tourists see when they get off the train I’m surprised they don’t turn around and go home.

I could not agree more with Martin Williams comments, I have to pay just to come to work every day in town as there is no parking spaces availiable.
I often have found myself sprinting to the car park to put more money in before the dreaded traffice warden arrives.

I quite agree with Martin Williams I have great difficulty trying to find a parking space with a toddler and baby in tow

Well done Martin for highlighting the state of parking in Rhyl. Diabolical!

once again you've hit the nail on the head martin. I have a baby and a four year old and parking is a nightmare - especially in the summer months. My mother is also disabled which adds to the difficulties when we all go shopping together! Martins ideas for the bee are ideal - have you ever thought of becoming a councillor?!

Rhyl has gained some very dubious parking restrictions over the years that now don't make any sense. Looking at the bigger picture it looks like a patchwork of different people having their say from the Council without there being one consistent rule that does the town any good.

A few years ago North Wales had a handful of Traffic Wardens, yet now the Council have employed a small army of them (due to making a large profit) and we don't see any return in terms of parking improvements.

Yet another problem within Rhyl highlighted by the Visitors finest. I agree with Louise.....Martin should be a councillor. There seems to be a lack ideas and solutions coming from the current incumbents.

I was most miffed at the fact that I received a parking ticket Christmas week of 2006 from parking outside of the church of all places... What do the pair of Veloceraptors (who were no where in sight 30 seconds before) who issued me with the ticket do during weddings and funerals and Since when has it been illegal to park outside of a Church? This ticket cost me £90, it would have been £60, but I dared to challenge it and due to all correspondance being sent via snail mail, it transpired that I was outside of the four weeks you get to pay the lower amount ... Bahh Humbug

DAVID WILLIAMS wrote...

There are disabled places at the library, and Windsor Street/Wellington Rd west of Water St could be reserved for disabled parking to facilitate access to the GPO; but we all know that those 4x4 morons who park in any old space that they feel like would quickly fill them up with not a blue badge in sight. Wellington Rd from Bodfor St to the High Street should be strictly no parking for anyone, and wardens should be in place to book anyone who disturbs traffic flow. Dave.

ANON wrote...

It very much sounds like David (re above comment) has a cosy little parking space at work and doesn't have to fight for one every morning.. or is he another mysteious 'Magic Bus' rider or an Anwyl employee maybe.

I agree that Rhyl town centre should be traffic free, but come on, we have to work and we all need space to park our cars, it's almost like the council are having 'fun' at our expense. If it's such an obvious problem why hasn't it been approached. Could they be stashing the money they have 'robbed' from us to build another White Elephant attraction that they will need to tear down in a few years time.

Sort the parking and people will come back. No one wants to come on holiday and go home broke from parking fines and us locals are getting wrestless too.

JUST A BRIEF RESPONSE TO ANON. FUNNY NAME!
I HAVE NO COZY PARKING SPACE IN THE TOWN - THEY ARE RESERVED FOR THE REVENUE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT. THE FREE PARKING BY VICKERS WAS NEVER REPLACED. IT WOULD NOT HURT THE COUNCIL TO MAKE THE UNDERGROUND CAR PARK FREE, YES FREE FOR ALL. IF THERE ARE THEN PEOPLE WHO FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO WALK FIFTY YARDS TO THE HIGH STREET - BOOK THEM. INCLUDING THOSE WHO PARK OUTSIDE A FAMOUS FAST FOOD OUTLET AND RUIN OUR VERY EXPENSIVELY PEDESTRIANISED HIGH STREET.

NO, I HAVE NO COZY PARKING SPACE - THOSE ARE RESERVED FOR EMPLOYEES OF REVENUE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT. THE OLD FREE PARKING AT THE VICKERS SITE HAS NEVER BEEN REPLACED, AND IT WOULD NOT HURT THE COUNCIL TO EASE PROBLEMS BY MAKING THE UNDERGROUND CAR PARK FREE, YES FREE, AND THEN HAVING A NO TOLERANCE POLICY FOR IDIOTS WHO CANNOT RAISE THE ENERGY TO WALK MORE THAN FIVE YARDS FROM CAR TO A FAMOUS FAST FOOD OUTLET ON OUR VERY EXPENSIVELY PAVED PEDESTRIAN ZONE
