Man's best friend?

Posted by Martin Williams on January 2, 2008 12:00 PM |

This is more of a plea for information than a rant, though I am perturbed by this issue.
What is the situation with dogs and muzzles? There are an alarming number of people walking around the area with vicious looking pitbull terriers, and none of them seem to have muzzles.
I’m sure there are many responsible dog owners out there but I haven’t encountered any in Rhyl of late. Abergele was the same when I visited a friend there last week.
We even had an incident outside the Visitor office in the run-up to Christmas, when two dogs fought in the High Street as a crowd of shoppers watched nervously.
For many - usually men with a complex - walking around with a snarling, spitting canine is a boost to the ego.

“Look at me and my dog, it will rip your leg off if you come near me

That’s what concerns me. I was stood at the traffic lights on Brighton Road this morning while a bloke in a bomber jacket stood silent, his dog chomping at the bit as he tightened its lead and dragged it away from me. This dog did not have a muzzle. It was dangerous and I felt like a rump steak on legs. I don’t want to sound previous or cliched, but if this dog had a got hold of a child. Well, it does not bear thinking.

Do we have a dog warden in this area? If so, who and where are they? What is the legislation? Is there any? I’m sure many of our animal rights campaigners - who are of course entitled to their opinion, will tell me to shut up and argue that dogs have just as many rights as I do.

They don’t, they’re dogs. I’m a human being. I’m not perfect, but I’d like to keep my legs.

These are the same people, and there seem to be many of them, who argue that seagulls were here before us and they have every right to steal food from your mouth and hands. They believe you are ‘common’ for strolling around town with an ice cream or sausage roll in your hand. Cobblers.

What do you think? Am I talking rubbish or do you agree?

I do take exception to Martin Williams assumption that many animal rights people would sympathize with letting untrained dogs run about out of control. No animal lover would want people or other dogs to suffer injuries and there are no bad dogs only bad owners .This is the usual media way of stigmatizing animal welfare groups instead of reporting all the good work they do for animals.

Oh dear. its that old animal rights accusation again. Why is it that anyone who speaks out in defence of animals is given the cold shoulder?
As you know, I'm 100% animal rights, but I have nothing against anyone eating rubbish (fast food) in town as long as they don't start screaming for the blood of the poor bloody seagulls who have to put up with a lot from the dirtiest creatures on the planet (mankind).
As for bad dogs, well, there are none, only bad owners!
Plus don't forget Martin, that we humans are only animals too. Animals possess the same five senses as us, so what better proof can there be?
Also, don't let my dog Holly hear you say she's just a dog, she's more human than most people. Plus she's easily offended!

What a load of codswallop has been written in these comments. Dogs are dogs and humans are humans, anyone who thinks differently needs their head testing.

No bad dogs? What a generalisation.

Pathetic...

I agree with Martin Williams. Dogs smell and are often a danger to the public. All dogs with an element of danger should be put down. As for Hewitt, there she goes again sounding off, chill out love and have a burger.

These people need to realise that walking around town centres with dogs is just wrong, especially when they don't have a muzzle.

Who in their right mind goes walking around a High Street or shopping centre with their dog. Why? Why not leave them at home and if you want to walk them take them to the park or the beach.

These people are idiots.

JUST READ THE LATEST PIECE ABOUT MORONS, (WITH SNARLING PIT BULL TERRIERS), DRAGGING THEIR KNUCKLES ON OUR STREETS. WHEN I WAS A LAD, I USED TO STROLL THROUGH RHYL WITH A LOVELY YOUNG LADY ON MY ARM; ON MY WAY TO THE BISTRO, OR TO SEE JUDY SINGING IN TITOS. NOW IT IS EN VOGUE TO DEMONSTRATE ONE'S TESTOSTERONE BY ESCORTING 'TYSON' DOWN TO THE SPAR TO GET ONE'S FIX OF CHEAP CIDER AND WINALOT. PATHETIC! RATHER HAVE A LOVELY YOUNG LADY ANY DAY.
